Aussie football star Jack Ginnivan has come under fire for dressing up as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for Halloween

Aussie football star Jack Ginnivan has come under fire for dressing up as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for Halloween.

Since the release of Ryan Murphy’s series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix, plenty of people have pointed out how inappropriate it is that the murderer continues to dominate pop culture despite his crimes, however, it seems Ginnivan didn’t get the memo.

Posting a snap of his outfit on Instagram, the 19-year-old sport star was quickly met with backlash.

Standing in a bathroom, Ginnivan donned a blood-splattered white T-shirt, jeans and a pair of glasses that were nearly identical to Dahmer’s infamous lenses.

He also clutched a cigarette in his right hand and simply captioned the image ‘j.d’.

Beneath Ginnivan’s photo, one person wrote: “Not in good taste. Their families are still grieving,” while a second Instagrammer echoed: “Bit tone deaf.”

Another person penned: “Disappointing and disgusting,” while a fourth added: “lowkey kinda gross.”

“Disgusting,” a fifth social media user frankly said.

However, others leapt to Ginnivan’s defence, with someone else saying: “OMG seriously, get a grip! So it's okay to post half naked pics, dress up as killer clowns, Mike Myers etc... It was Halloween and the Netflix series had just been top #1 rated series to watch.”

Another wrote: “Boss! Dressing irreverently is the point. If it makes you uncomfortable, good. That’s the idea. Go to bed and turn your phone off if you can’t handle a costume.”

“Yes! People get offended! Lots of horror movies are based on real events! IT was inspired by John Wayne Gacy, hence the killer clown costumes. Leatherface was inspired by Ed Gein. The list goes on,” read another comment.

UNILAD has approached Ginnivan for comment.

Last month, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles didn’t hold back when criticising anyone considering dressing up as Dahmer on 31 October.

Taking to Twitter on 19 October, she tweeted: “im just gon go head and say it, put the jeffrey dahmer costumes back in the closet. we ain’t having it!!!!!!”

Dahmer killed a total of 17 people, most of whom were Black men and boys, and often engaged in cannibalism and necrophilia.

Biles’ tweet was met with plenty of support from her 1.7 million followers, with one person replying: “I do not understand why people are into this guy. Where have we gone as a society that there are people glamorize him?”

Another person echoed: “It’s crazy someone has to say this,” while a third wrote: “So disgusting. The new series is making everyone weird.”
