Channing Tatum has revealed the frustration he feels over the cancellation of the superhero film Gambit.

Gambit was originally confirmed in 2014, and it was revealed that Tatum would be taking on the role of the Louisiana mutant and member of the X-Men.

The actor worked on developing the project for years alongside his longtime producing partner, Reid Carolin, but the film ultimately never materialised and was officially cancelled by Disney after it purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Tatum has not appeared in the lead role of a film since 2017's Logan Lucky, but with two new movies now set to be released in the coming weeks, he reflected back on the work he put into Gambit during an interview with The Independent.

The Magic Mike star is said to have shook his head as he discussed the cancelled project, saying, 'I mean, the amount of time, the amount of sweat and tears.'

Meanwhile, Carolin described the anger portrayed by Tatum at the time as she said, 'When Gambit was falling apart, I remember Chan throwing a chair across the room. We were looking at it each other like, I can’t believe we put two years into that.'

Tatum went on to acknowledge that he and Carolin will never know 'what it could have been' unless Marvel just so happens to call them up and say, 'Hey, would you be interested in revisiting this?'.

With all the time and effort they had put into Gambit having amounted to nothing, the pair turned their attention to creating a film they had control over.

Calling to mind their experiences working on the 2012 film Magic Mike, Carolin said, 'We were like, we need to be able to go make something. We reflected on the experience of Magic Mike where we didn’t have anyone looking over our shoulder. There was nobody saying, ‘You can’t do this, you can’t do that'.’

The upcoming film Dog, which stars Tatum, marks the directorial debut of both Tatum and Carolin, telling the story of a US Army Ranger who travels to a fallen soldier’s funeral with their dog.

Commenting on the new film, Tatum said, 'I didn’t want to just go jump in somebody’s movie. We wanted our next thing to be something that was our story, that we did, and not just make something because we could.'

Following the release of Dog, Tatum will appear in The Lost City alongside Sandra Bullock.

Dog is set to be released in the UK on February 18.
