Britney Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline has said he believed her dad was right to put a conservatorship in place, saying that he believed it ‘saved her’.

The former backing dancer, who shares sons Preston, 16, and 15-year-old Jayden with Spears, took part in an interview with 60 Minutes Australia where he spoke about his past relationship and the singer’s life.

Spears was placed into a conservatorship - which meant handing control of her career and finances to her dad - in 2008 and it remained in place until late last year.

When asked if he believed Jamie Spears made the right decision enacting the conservatorship, Federline said: “One hundred percent I feel like he saved her back then.”

However, he then admitted to not being involved in any of the details of the conservatorship or why it was implemented in the first place.

He said: “I wasn't involved in any of it how the conservatorship came about. I don't know. They were worried about their daughter and trying to do whatever they can to help her. That's all that I knew.”

Federline said that their sons were ‘happy’ when the conservatorship was brought to an end last year.

”Both of them were so happy for her, you know?” he said. “Because it's not always about what's right. It's about this is what mum wanted, you know, mum got.”

Jayden also appeared in the interview, where he insisted that his grandfather does ‘care about’ his mum.

He said: “He was trying to be like any father, like pursue his daughter's dream of being a superstar, working and doing all these concerts and performing. But I think some people are just, like, ceasing to realise how much he cares about her.”

Last month, Federline told ITV that the boys had ‘decided they are not seeing her right now’, which he attributed to some semi-nude photos Spears shared on social media following the removal of her conservatorship.

Federline, who also has two daughters from another relationship, said the boys found it ‘tough’ seeing their mum’s social media posts.

In response, Spears shared a statement on Instagram, in which she said: "It saddens me to hear that my ex-husband has decided to discuss the relationship between me and my children ..

"As we all know, raising teenage boys is never easy for anyone ... it concerns me the fact that the reason is based on my Instagram ... I gave them everything ... Only one word: HURTFUL ... I'll say it ... My mother told me 'You should GIVE them to their dad' ... I'm sharing this because I can ... Have a good day folks!!!"
