Britney Spears has been arrested in California in relation to an alleged incident while she was driving.

The 44-year-old 'Baby One More Time' singer was put in police custody in Ventura County, California at around 9:30pm local time on Wednesday (March 4).

According to police records, Spears was arrested by the California Highway Patrol, and then booked at around 3am on Thursday morning for an alleged DUI (driving under the influence). In California, a DUI can refer to either alcohol or drugs while behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Spears has since been released from police custody, and is now scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

The news comes just hours after it was reported that Spears had been successfully granted a permanent restraining order against a Louisiana man who allegedly showed up uninvited to her home in Los Angeles.

Court documents cited by TMZ claim the 51-year-old man trespassed at Spears' house in 2025 and was spotted by Spears' security guard, who then called the police.

Spears claimed in the documents that she had no idea who the man was, and has no relationship with him.

As well as trespassing at her house, the man is accused of having harassed Spears online since 2013, with social media posts which were 'largely incoherent'.

"Several [posts] could be interpreted as threatening to harm [Spears]," the documents claimed.

In the wake of the filing, the man has been ordered to stay 100 yards away from Spears at all times.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Spears had sold the rights to her entire music catalogue, which includes popular tracks including 'Toxic', 'Gimme More' and 'Womanizer', to independent music publisher Primary Wave.

BBC News reports that Spears sold her catalogue on 30 December, 2025 for around $200 million. She had previously made clear that she would 'never return to the music industry', having released her last song, a duet with Elton John, in 2022.

Spears made the declaration in response to speculation that she may be preparing to release a 10th studio album, but the singer shut down the rumors with a post on Instagram.

"Just so we're clear most of the news is trash!!!," she wrote.

"They keep saying I'm turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry!!!"

That being said, Spears did say she was still involved in music, and now writes songs 'for fun' as well as for other artists.

LADbible Group has contacted representatives for Spears for comment on her arrest.
