Bindi Irwin shares emotional tribute to her dad on Father's Day

Steve Irwin sadly passed away in 2006

Steve Irwin's daughter Bindi has shared an emotional tribute to her dad on Father's Day.

On 4 September, 2006, the Australian zookeeper sadly passed away at the age of 44 due to an accidental attack by stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef - with yesterday marking 16 years since the tragic incident.

Bindi, 26, is now parent to one-year-old Grace Warrior after getting married to Chandler Powell in 2020.

Paying homage to her late father yesterday, she shared a photo of the pair who were pictured on a nighttime boat ride back in the day.

Alongside the photo, Bindi wrote: "Grandpa Crocodile, I know you would’ve been the most incredible grandfather because you were such an extraordinary dad.

"Thank you for being an amazing guardian angel for Grace."

Bindi's heartfelt message was shared by many, with one person commenting: "You carry all his love with you now."

Another added: "Your father will be proud of who you are right now," while someone else wrote: "He gave this world such a gift by sharing his life with us.

"I'm sure Grace will think of him as a superhero as she grows and she'll be right. He was extraordinary and so are you."

Bindi's brother Robert, 18, also shared a touching tribute, writing: "It's Father's Day today in Australia, and I am sending my love to those who are missing their dad today.

"I cherish all the good times with my dad and feel grateful to be able to keep his memory and legacy alive."

In an interview last year, Bindi spoke candidly about the sudden passing of her father.

"For us, losing dad is probably the hardest thing we’ve ever gone through and our grief walks beside us everyday," she said during an appearance on the What About Death? podcast.

"I remember thinking, this emotion is going to shape me; this is going to be a real turning point on how I continue on with the rest of my life and I want to be strong for my family."

She added: "One day – I wrote it in my journal, actually – I was like, ‘This is it; I am choosing not to wallow in sadness anymore. I am choosing to find the strength that dad had and continue on."

It's safe to say that the legacy of 'The Crocodile Hunter' will indeed live on.
