Your alarm has gone off, you've grabbed your phone and unlocked it ready to catch up on anything you've missed overnight - but where's that familiar little bird?

This will probably be a question millions of people have asked themselves this morning, because overnight that recognizable bird on his sky-blue background has vanished and has been replaced with a dramatic, 'X' on a black background.

Elon Musk has changed a lot since his takeover.

The change comes after Twitter owner Elon Musk declared that he'd be changing the name of the app; a controversial move that sparked mixed opinions with longtime users.

Earlier this year, he changed the company's official name to X Holdings Corp with the intention of creating 'X, the everything app', which is capable of both social media and payment functions.

On 23 July, Musk tweeted that the url X.com now leads people to the Twitter website, and added: “Interim X logo goes live later today.”

The logo was rolled out on desktop and has appeared on the Twitter site over the last few days, but now it's officially made its way to phone screens, and the lack of warning has caught people completely off guard.

Numerous Twitter user shared their thoughts on the change this morning (31 July), though a lot of people were only able to do so after actually locating the app on their screen.

The Twitter app has now changed on phone screens.

It's unlikely to have moved from its usual spot, but since people aren't used to seeing the black logo they struggled to find the app at first.

"Why I can’t find my Twitter app where it go? And when did I down load this app that got a X on it wtf going on," one baffled person wrote, while another added: "I can’t find Twitter on my phone because it’s a stupid X now."

A third added: "Am I the only one that can’t find Twitter on their iPhone today? This is gonna take some getting used to."

Twitter users may be at different stages with the update, because if automatic updates have been switched off some users might still have that precious bird flying high on their screens.

Twitter users have struggled to locate the app with its new logo.

Other users have had their logo changed, but the name 'Twitter' is still attached, while some are facing the whole works with the new app and title of 'X'.

The new logo apparently isn't the only thing users will have to start getting used to, because last week Musk declared that he'd also be changing the look of the app so it would operate only in 'dark mode', meaning the feed would show up on a black background, instead of a white one.

Explaining his reasoning for this decision, Musk said: "It is better in every way."

That claim might be subject to opinion, but I guess he's the boss!
