Netflix introduces new feature to stop people sharing accounts

It truly is the end of an era.

If you've ever shared a Netflix account with an ex-partner or former housemate - only to be left without any of your favourite shows once they finally changed the password - then listen up.

Netflix has introduced a new feature to stop people sharing accounts - and it truly does represent the end of an era.

First reported by The Verge, Netflix introduced the new feature this week - called 'Profile Transfer' - which allows users to move "personalised recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and other settings” onto another account.

It's pretty useful for those who don't want to lose all their data if they've been sharing someone else's account - and suddenly get kicked out.

Timi Kosztin, Netflix’s product manager of product innovation, wrote in a press release: "People move. Families grow. Relationships end. But throughout these life changes, your Netflix experience should stay the same.

“Today, we’re launching Profile Transfer, a feature that lets people using your account transfer a profile - keeping the [personalised] recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and other settings - when they start their own membership.”

The move comes as Netflix begins cracking down on profile sharing among its users.

Earlier this year, the company announced it would start charging subscribers an extra fee for people outside of their immediate household using their log-in details.

Netflix said the test will be rolled out after launching in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru initially, before expanding to other countries.

The streaming service explained: "Over the last 15 years, we’ve worked hard to build a streaming service that’s easy to use, including for people who travel or live together. It’s great that our members love Netflix movies and TV shows so much they want to share them more broadly."

"But today’s widespread account sharing between households undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve our service.

"So we’ve been carefully exploring different ways for people who want to share their account to pay a bit more.

From next month, Netflix will roll out its 'Basic With Ads' package - a cheaper alternative which features ads, for the first time on the platform.

From 3 November onwards, UK viewers will be able to knock their subscription price down to £4.99 with the new package.

It'll feature alongside the already existing plans, which are advert-free – Basic, Standard and Premium – so if you're already happy with one of these plans, nothing will change.
