A computer scientist dubbed the 'godfather of AI' has listed all the jobs he think will cease to exist in the future because of developing tech.

Advancements in technology in recent years has meant a subsequent push on AI and how it is used in industry and even by the general public.

ChatGPT is becoming more mainstream - though the worry that AI could push people out of jobs in the future is very much real.

Former Google employee Geoffrey Hinton is certainly not a fan of the tech as he is on a mission to raise awareness of the dangers of artificial intelligence.

Dubbed the 'Godfather of AI', Hinton left his post at the search engine back in 2023 in a bid to alert people of AI, which he believes is threat to mankind.

So, what jobs are at risk of being wiped out because of AI?

Replaced by AI: Call centre workers

Working in a call centre is certainly a popular profession to go into, but such a job may not be a thing for much longer, according to Hinton.

Speaking to Steven Bartlett on his The Diary of a CEO podcast, the 77-year-old said: "If I worked in a call center, I’d be terrified. I think it’s beginning to happen already.

“I read an article in The Atlantic recently that said it’s already getting hard for university graduates to get jobs.

"And part of that may be that people are already using AI for the jobs they would have gotten."

Hinton concluded: "If you get a big increase in productivity, everybody should be better off.

“But if you can replace lots of people by AI, then the people who get replaced will be worse off, and the company that supplies the AI will be much better off than the company that uses the AI.”

    Replaced by AI: Paralegals

Professionals who help lawyers with a variety of different tasks, including assisting with legal research and document preparation, could be a thing of the past.

Hinton suggested it won't be needed for 'very long', leading to a 'wealth inequality issue'.

At a conference in 2023, he also warned of potential AI biases that could have damaging consequences:“AI trained by good people will have a bias towards good; AI trained by bad people such as Putin or somebody like that will have a bias towards bad.

“We know they’re going to make battle robots. They’re not going to necessarily be good since their primary purpose is going to be to kill people.”

    Safe: Plumbers

While many jobs are said to be at risk, one career that Hinton believes is one of the safest professions you can get into right now is plumbing.

When asked what his advice would be for people and their career prospects, Hinton replied: "In the meantime, I'd say it's going to be a long time before it's as good at physical manipulation as us and so a good bet would be to be a plumber."

Something tells me applications for plumbing courses is about to increase.

Many famous figures have spoken about AI; both Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates have shared warnings regarding its progression, while people like Elon Musk are already using it within their businesses.
