It is quite a lengthy trip to get to the subway station in this city in China that holds the title as the world’s deepest subway.
For the cities lucky enough to have an extensive subway system, convenience is normally one of its major benefits. But that isn’t exactly the case in this city, where it has the title of world’s deepest subway station.
In fact, it is so deep beneath the city that users have complained that their ears have popped as they travel so far underground, something that also requires them to take as many as eight elevators.
Those wanting to avoid this feeling are better off opting for the escalators as a gradual descent the ears more time to equalize the pressure, so the sensation isn’t so severe.

With that said, the speed of taking the elevator is unmatched as it takes about one minute to plummet down to the station level, considerably longer than most elevator journeys.
So, where is this deep underground station?

It is the Hongyancun Station in Chongqing, China as it is an impressive 116m below the surface, about the equivalent of going 40 stories underground.

For comparison, America’s deepest station on subway network is Washington Park in Portland, Oregon, at 79m below ground level.
The surrounding landscape is part of the reason why the station in Chongqing had to be so deep underground.
The Chongqing area is famed for its hills and winding roads so constructors opted for a station deep underground to avoid the extremely hilly landscape.
While you might expect the station to be rather run down and old, its creation is relatively new, only being opened in 2022.

This has meant that it has benefited from the wonders of modern construction methods compared to other stations in the country.

This impressive station was also completed in just after 400 days of construction according to local news reports.
Construction workers admitted it was a mammoth of a task however as it took them around 38 minutes to climb the stairs up from the station to the surface, something they likened to climbing a mountain each day.

The city even hosts a Hongyancun Metro Vertical Marathon where runners have race 860 steps of stairs with a 141-meter elevation gain between two entrances to celebrate the impressive engineering feat.
So if you ever find yourself in central China in Chongqing, might be worth taking a train from the subway just to say that you have.
