A Canadian singer has issued an apology for changing the lyrics to the country's national anthem.

Chantal Kreviazuk performed at last night's 4 Nations Face-Off final, which saw Canada prove victorious against their American competitors.

But away from the sport, Kreviazuk got people talking with her national anthem performance — during which she received boos from American hockey fans.

The Grammy-award winning singer intentionally sang 'that only us command' instead of 'in all of us command'.

Why? In protest of Donald Trump's attempts to have Canada because the US' 51st state.

See the moment here:

Trump has raised tariffs on imported goods from the neighboring country into the US, and suggested that Canada join the US as a way of avoiding this.

The suggestion went down like a lead balloon with Canadians though, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau making it clear that this isn't an option he's considering.

Speaking out in the wake of her controversial decision to change the song lyrics, Kreviazuk penned a lengthy statement on Instagram and shared a photo of the amended words on the palm of her hand.

"I am sorry if my performance of our national anthem rubbed you the wrong way," her post began.

"If I was a little off pitch or if it wasn’t perfect in its tone. I am sorry if i messed up the French line I inserted to bring some balance to our nation’s history without losing those words 'glorious and free' in English… I am sorry if you think that we’d be better off annexed."

Kreviazuk went on to say art is an 'expression of truth' and that 'we must stand up, use our voices and try to protect ourselves'.

"We should express our outrage in the face of any abuses of power," the award-winnng singer went on.

Kreviazuk's actions have received a mixed response online.

One person asked: "That singer that sang the Canadian anthem, is from Canada... Why didn't she know the lyrics ??"

Also not realising that the changes were intentional, another person penned: "That might be the worst Canadian anthem I've heard... Wow. I'm sure she was nervous but messing up lyrics multiple times in the first sentence is crazy."

Others criticized her for the 'woke' lyric change, as another quipped: "Trudeau must have messed with the lyrics again lol."

Meanwhile, different viewers criticized the performance itself and branded it 'one of the worst I have heard'.

UNILAD have approached Kreviazuk's rep for comment.
