There isn’t a lot worse than an unexpected bill, except one that is massively more expensive than normal and completely out of the blue.

A Texas AT&T customer was hit with quite the hefty phone bill and was left simply dumbfounded on what had gone wrong.

The customer shared the story on Reddit and tried to wrack their brains on how their bill had gone up so much.

Just for clarification, the customer isn’t used to phone bills costing $6,223.60 so was understandably concerned about why he had been charged so much.

Writing on Reddit he said: “I have been with AT&T for over a decade and I have always had unlimited plans so I knew this was a mistake.

“This has caused a huge amount of stress on me and my family around the holiday."

They explained to other social media users they had four wireless phone plans with AT&T, including iPhones on that account, receive a First Responders' discount and usually only rack up a bill of around $250.

So, their concern is more than justified, but what was the mistake that caused the bill to skyrocket?

Well, the cause was a charge for ‘Data Pay Per use' which costs $2 per MB of data used. The customer used about 3GB of data that month (3,000MB), costing them a ridiculous $6,194.

As the customer stated, he had always had unlimited plans he was right in thinking a mistake had been made.

The annoying thing was, he was essentially given the runaround while trying to resolve the bill issue.

The customer said they had been trying to fix the issue with AT&T for days and had spent ‘over an hour on the phone with customer service’ to no avail.

According to the customer, they spoke with phone agents, supervisors as well as as staff at a brick-and-mortar store and was told to contact the AT&T president's office.

The president's office told the customer an AT&T store would be able to handle the issue but when he called the office again was told they needed another two days to find a solution.

Thankfully the issue was resolved and the Reddit user explained AT&T was more than happy to offer a gesture of goodwill for the difficulties. They were told the bill would disappear from their account in the next day or two.

They wrote: “AT&T also extended me a goodwill credit which was very much appreciated.

“Hats off to the office of the president as they provided amazing service and got the issue resolved ASAP once they got involved."

Just as well this was sorted out, no one wants to pay a hefty thousand-dollar bill around the holidays.
