Kansas City Chiefs player is offering to cover the $1.5 million in stolen chicken wings to free woman who stole them

Chris Jones has shared his thoughts on the sentencing of Vera Liddell earlier this week.

The ongoing story of a woman stealing $1.5 million worth of chicken wings has taken a surprising turn, though many question whether or not it’s a legitimate one.

A 68-year-old woman from the Chicagoland area was recently found guilty of using school funds to purchase over 11,000 boxes of chicken wings.

Vera Liddell, the woman in question, used her position as the Head of Food Services for Harvey School District 152 to acquire 11,000 boxes of wings with money meant to supply kids with food throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

After getting arrested in 2022 for her actions, she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison as a result.

Now, one member of the Kansas City Chiefs has thrown his hat in the ring to pay the $1.5 million back and get Liddell out of prison in the process.

Chris Jones, a defensive tackle for the reigning Super Bowl Champions, took to Twitter to seemingly play defense for the convicted wing thief.

“I’ll pay for the wings that she stole to get her free,” Jones posted in response to a post regarding Liddell’s conviction, amassing over 46,000 likes in the process.

However, many believe the headline Jones was replying to was far too vague and may have given the DT the wrong idea.

“Stole from families during the lockdowns,” one fan replied, “Not as simple as the headline.”

Another held a similar position: “She ordered and stole 11,000 cases of wings over 2 years. This wasn’t a one-time thing. And paying for something doesn’t make a crime go away.”

Regardless of the fan reaction to the prospect of Jones attempting to get Liddell freed, an idea that is far more difficult to execute following her guilty plea and subsequent sentencing, many believe that the Mississippi native is simply joking about paying for her freedom.

“As a lifelong Chiefs fan and also a big Chris Jones fan, Chris is a grade-A troll,” one fan said in a Reddit thread regarding Jones’ post, “I'd almost guarantee this is out of context and he has no real intention of doing this.”

Others agreed with this stance while also speculating why Jones would make the likely-exaggerative statement in the first place.

“He might just think she Oceans 11'ed 1.5 mill in wings in one swoop,” another commenter guessed, referencing the popular heist movies from 1960 and 2001.

“I'd pay off for a lady like that too. Greatest chicken heist ever.”
