Donald Trump has suggested that 'we shouldn't even have an election' as the midterms approach.

The US is currently gearing up for the midterms, which will see voters electing people to congress.

Polls are currently suggesting that the Republicans are in for a bruising in the elections, with Trump's opinion polling dropping substantially since he was voted into the White House for a second term.

This include a general outlook on Trump, but also on issues which are important to his presidency, such as immigration.

But despite the signs pointing to punishing midterms for Trump, the president appears calm about the prospect.

In a recent speech, Trump made an alarming suggestion, saying that rather than facing the Democrats, perhaps the midterms should be called off altogether.

According to Reuters, Trump said: "It's some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don't win the midterms."

The president added that he felt he had achieved that much so far that 'when you think of it, we shouldn't even have an election.'

One speech last week also saw Trump complaining that he has to face the Democrats in the midterms.

Ironically, this came five years to the day after the January 6 insurrection, in which his supporters violently stormed the US capitol building in Washington.

Since then, Trump has frequently denied that he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, despite the fact that this would have barred him from running for office in 2024 if it was indeed the case.

Referring to the Democratic party, he said: "How we have to even run against these people."

Possibly testing the water or pushing boundaries, he said: "I won't say cancel the election, they should cancel the election, because the fake news with say, 'He wants the elections canceled. He's a dictator.' They always call me a dictator."

Since this speech, Trump has ordered mass immigration raids by ICE in cities and states with a strong Democratic presence, with Minnesota governor Tim Walz saying in a speech to his state that agents were stopping Minnesotans and demanding to see their papers.

Trump has also made repeated threats to cut federal funding to states whose representatives publicly oppose him, including his own hometown New York City, due to the victory of Zohran Mamdani in the mayoral election.

Trump has also alluded to possible circumstances which could see him stay on as president, alluding to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky remaining in power due to Ukraine being invaded by Russia.

Trump said: "So let me just say three and a half years from now - so you mean, if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections, oh, I wonder what the fake news would say."
