It’s only January, but already people are thinking about their plans for this summer, and that includes their suitcases.

There are so many to choose from, and there are also a lot of considerations when thinking about packing your case.

Do you want a brightly colored one? A sturdy case or a soft case?

What about the size?

Honestly, it’s a lot to go through, but when you finally figure it out, you’re left feeling great…until it goes missing.

That’s right, after trudging through TSA security and boarding your flight, you’d have thought that all that was left was to collect your luggage in your new destination’s airport.

But, there’s something you didn’t bank on when it comes to choosing your suitcase.

It’s that there’s one specific type that is 40 per cent more likely to vanish.

That’s because, according to an Eminent survey, people tend to choose black cases more often than others.

So, why does this make a difference?

Well, as per travel expert from US summer camp Wild Packs, it’s all down to being able to spot it on the carousel.

Jamie Frazer said that you should avoid black luggage if you don’t want to pick up someone else’s.

He said, as per Lancs Live: "Hard-sided black suitcases are the most common luggage type globally, making them both the hardest to identify and the most likely to go missing.

"This style of suitcase, which also includes wheels, is the default choice for travellers, but if your bag is misplaced, you don't want it to be hard to distinguish from other luggage. Instead, choose colourful luggage or add unique markers to your bag to make it stand out and easy to find.”

He went on to add: "If you are travelling with a black hard-sided suitcase, it is best to arrive at the airport early and check your luggage well ahead of your flight. This allows airline staff extra time to properly tag and load your bag, reducing the chance of it being mishandled or misplaced."

Thankfully, while he expresses his dislike for black cases, he has some tips for you so that you can choose a better color.

He said that you should choose one that’s colorful or unique, as per the Express.

He said: "These vibrant colours are far easier to spot on the baggage carousel than the typical black hard-sided suitcase. If you still want to use a black suitcase, include colourful luggage tags, stickers or patterned straps so that it still stands out in a crowd."

Also, if you really want to make sure that you’re getting the right bag, no matter the color or design, make sure you attach a tag.

Frazer said: "Even if your bag is intended as a carry-on, it's a good idea to attach a secure luggage tag with your contact details. Include your name, phone number, and email address on the tag, as these are typically the quickest ways to get in touch. However, avoid listing your home address to reduce safety risks."
