SWAT team descend on Chicago Trump Tower amid reports of armed woman on the loose

A woman is now in custody after triggering an hours-long lockdown.

Trump Tower in Chicago has been forced into an hours-long lockdown after a woman brandishing a rifle entered the building.

Chicago newspaper the Sun-Times reported that a 'rifle-wielding woman' walked into the Trump International Hotel and Tower at 11:25am local time on Wednesday (April 5).

The incident occurred one day after former President Donald Trump was arraigned over 34 counts relating to falsifying business records to conceal an alleged affair with former porn star Stormy Daniels.

The 45th President of the United States pleaded not guilty on all charges.

While the New York Post reports that police in the Big Apple feared trouble might break out in their city in the wake of Trump's arrest, it seems the Windy City copped its fair share of mayhem.

According to CBS News, SWAT teams were deployed to Chicago's Trump Tower Trump and International Hotel after an armed woman entered the hotel.

Police blocked off the streets surrounding the Trump building.

CBS reports that at least two armored SWAT trucks were on site for more than three hours.

The Sun-Times newspaper reported that the woman entered the 100-storey building and had made her way to an apartment on the 27th floor.

The Chicago Police Department told NBC 5 they were on the scene at the city's Wabash Avenue tower to respond to a 'call of service'.

Chicago Police later tweeted: "SWAT officers are on-scene in the 400 block of N. Wabash for a domestic-related incident. At this time, we believe this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public."

Steve, a Trump Tower resident who did not provide his surname, told local radio station WBBM he had been shut out of the building.

"I was just doing some housework and some cooking and I decided to take some air," he said.

"I came down to the lobby and I was quickly escorted away from the lobby, out of the building and was told not to come back until it was clear."

He added: "I asked several times what was going on and they wouldn’t acknowledge."

According to the Sun-Times, police radio chatter indicated that the armed woman said she 'was tired of being abused by her husband'.

At around 3pm local time the Chicago Police Department confirmed the armed woman had been taken into custody.

She was taken to hospital for evaluation.
