Super Sized Salon star Jamie Lopez dies aged 37

Jamie Lopez was the founder of Las Vegas business Babydoll Beauty Couture

Super Sized Salon star Jamie Lopez has died at the age of 37, her Babydoll Beauty Couture team have confirmed.

Lopez was the founder of Las Vegas business Babydoll Beauty Couture, which bills itself as ‘the world's first plus-size salon’ and became the subject of WE TV’s Super Sized Salon.

Her business confirmed the sad news in a statement on social media, saying the team needed time and space to process the ‘tremendous loss’.

The statement said: “On behalf of the Babydoll Beauty Couture team, we regretfully announce, with great pain, the passing of The Founder & Owner of Babydoll Beauty Couture, The Legendary Jamie Lopez.

“We ask, on behalf of the Babydoll family, that you allow us time to process this tremendous loss.

“Further details and arrangements will be announced soon. We have suffered an extraordinary loss and appreciate the time and space to grieve in peace.

“Please keep our Babydoll family & team lifted in your hearts and prayers.

“We'd like to thank the staff & crew of @matadorcontent & @wetv for all their continuous support in this difficult time.”

The post was accompanied by photos of Lopez and castmates from the programme.

The first season of Super Sized Salon premiered earlier this year, showing as Lopez created her unique beauty salon that aimed to cater to plus-size clients.

It also followed her weight loss journey as she learnt to walk again after losing 400lbs (181kg), saying in the show’s trailer how she had once weighed 846lbs (383kg) at one point.

Back in 2017, Lopez explained why she decided to open Babydoll Beauty Couture, telling Yahoo how she had started off as a makeup artist and found she was ‘highly discriminated against for being a plus-size woman’.

“At 26 years old, I decided to make a change that would hopefully impact the world, and now at 31, I have had the pleasure of moving my dream to Las Vegas,” she said.

Tributes have been pouring in for the star.

Lopez continued: "I was inspired by there being no place I could get my nails or hair done in Vegas that would accommodate my needs as a plus-size woman, and I decided it was time to make some changes for the plus-size women of the world.”

Friends and fans have been paying tribute to the late star on Instagram, with one writing: “I am completely devastated!!!! This woman was an inspiration to the world!!!! The way Jamie will be alive forever is by keeping her business up and running! She worked so hard to make all these wonderful things happen.”

A third wrote: “I’m sorry to read this. I instantly fell in love with all of you when I stumbled across the show. She was so sweet - Rest In Paradise.”

A fourth added: “She hired me on several occasions and she was nothing but a professional. Her hustle was nonstop. So sad to hear of her passing. All Gods graces and prayers to her family. Goodnight Jamie and thank you.”
