People left speechless after seeing ‘disgusting’ video of how caviar is really harvested

A chef revealed how he harvests caviar in a clip that has gone viral on Twitter

A viral video showing the reality behind caviar production has left viewers speechless - and more than a little queasy.

What many assumed to be a delicacy of luxury has been revealed in a far less glamorous light, with people conceding that they thought the way in which it is harvested was a 'joke' at first, while others described it as 'disgusting'.

The clip, which has been circulating across social media platforms, shows fish being sliced open to remove the prized roe - with little fanfare or finesse.

After the recording was posted on Twitter, one user hilariously quoted lyrics from Kelela's hit 'Waitin' - which was a reference to a caviar-related clip that went viral five years prior.

"Stop... Lemme catch my breath," they posted.

A second asked: "No washing or rinsing off the eggs? Just straight up spice and to the stomach?"

“Yknow…I actually thought this was a joke when I heard about it as a kid,” one user admitted, echoing the disbelief felt by many after watching the video.

While one user asked Twitter's AI bot Grok - which if you ask me, needlessly poses questions under what feels like EVERY post on the platform - whether any harm could come from the way in which caviar is harvested in the video.

It replied: "Caviar is nutritious with omega-3s, vitamins, and protein, but potential side effects include high sodium (up to 240mg per tbsp, risking blood pressure issues), allergic reactions if you're sensitive to fish, and contaminants like mercury - especially avoid if pregnant.

"Food poisoning from bacteria is rare but possible if it's not fresh. Moderation is key."

While the Grok's answer was actually informative, many viewers remained too rattled to think about health benefits. For them, the raw visuals spoke louder than the chatbot's nutritional stats.

You probably associate caviar with fine dining, but the reality of it isn't as fine as it sounds, as it is actually the unfertilized eggs of sturgeon and other fish.

Traditionally, the harvesting of caviar involved killing the fish and manually extracting the roe. However, modern methods, like 'no-kill' or stripping', aim to reduce harm to the fish... although many still opt to kill the fish for the quality of its eggs when dead.

The video has reignited conversations about transparency in the food industry, and whether consumers really know how their favorite luxury items make it to their plate.

While that still remains to be seen, I'm not 100 per cent convinced by caviar.
