A sex trend known as shallowing is making waves in the bedroom, and it could be the key to unlocking more pleasure and fewer worries between the sheets.
The term shallowing has been around for a number of years, but thanks to research from the Indiana University School of Medicine, it's been thrown back into the spotlight.
A study of over 4,000 women, aged 18 to 93, found that a staggering 84 percent reported 'increased pleasure' from the move - and with figures like that, you can see why people are giving it a go.
As for what exactly shallowing involves, it's when someone lightly stimulates the entrance of the vagina using fingers, a toy, a penis, or even oral play.

Unlike deeper penetration, the focus is on teasing and building arousal just at the opening, and many say this gentler approach creates a whole new kind of intimacy.

Now, an expert has revealed the benefits of the sex trend - and one of the primary advantages of shallowing is the 'prevention of sexually transmitted infections [STIs]', claims Your Coffee Break's Rachel Bartee.
They went on to explain that shallowing highlights the importance of putting on a condom before any penetration, helping lower the risk of STIs from pre-ejaculate or tiny tears.

"Condoms remain the gold standard in STI prevention, and the 'Dip the tip' method, when combined with proper condom use, ensures extra precaution during the most sensitive initial moments of contact," she wrote.
Bartee also claims that it allows 'increased awareness of consent' due to slowing down the process, which can help 'foster deeper connection' between partners.
On top of this, it is also alleged that shallowing improves sexual wellness for men as it 'encourages men to be more mindful of their bodies and sensations', while slowing it down can reduce the risk of premature ejaculation.

Finally, it also offers the benefits of 'enhanced comfort' for all involved, adding: "Particularly for those who experience discomfort during penetration, Shallowing offers a gentler start."
Meanwhile, sex expert Annabelle Knight recently offered her own advice for avoiding injuries while experimenting with positions.
Speaking on behalf of Lovehoney, she said: "Placing a pillow under the lumbar spine can reduce back injuries or flare-ups. It may also help increase pleasure during penetration.
"If the individual on top finds they have discomfort in their knees during this position, moving to a standing position whilst the receiver is on the bed may avoid this.

"Changing how close you are to your lover's body may make it easier or harder for you and reduce muscle fatigue - it’s all about experimenting!”
