Irish police have charged a man after a dead body of a pensioner was brought to a post office in a presumed attempt to claim his pension last week.

The news comes after two men in their 30s were arrested yesterday, January 26, as part of the investigation into the incident. The second man has since been released from custody.

66-year-old Peadar Doyle was brought to the post office in Co Carlow by two men on Friday, January 21 and was allegedly carried to the counter. According to The Irish Times, a 'concerned staff member enquired about the wellbeing of the man being propped up', after which the men allegedly 'dropped the man and left the post office'.

As staff attended to Doyle, they discovered he was dead. No money was handed over to the men.

According to RTE, prior to the incident, a man had called the post office to enquire about collecting a pension on behalf of an elderly man, however, he was told the man would have to be present. A short while later, two men turned up with the deceased.

The man who was charged today is set to appear at Carlow District Court this morning.

One of the men was released on Wednesday night; gardai said a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The other man has been charged and will appear before a special sitting at Kilkenny District Court today, January 27, Sky News reports.
