Britney Spears has released her first new song in six years and fans say it's an absolute banger.

The pop star has teamed up with the legendary Elton John to do a duet remix of his iconic 1971 track 'Tiny Dancer'.

'Hold Me Closer' is very similar to the original, however it has a modern, more techno-infused vibe.

Britney says releasing this song is a huge deal for her as she's now free to experiment with music after her conservatorship was ended.

She wrote on social media: "Okie dokie … my first song in 6 years !!!! It’s pretty damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time … @eltonofficial !!!!

"I’m kinda overwhelmed… it’s a big deal to me !!! I’m meditating more and learning my space is valuable and precious !!!"

She added: "I’m learning everyday is a clean slate to try and be a better person and do what makes me happy … yes I choose happiness today.

"I tell myself every day to let go of the hurt bitterness and try to forgive myself and others to what may have been hurtful.

"I want to be fearless like when I was younger and not be so scared and fearful.

"I pray there actually is truth to the Holy Spirit and I hope that spirit is with my children as well !!!

"Yes … I choose happiness and joy today."

Rumours had been swirling for weeks that the 40-year-old had been in conversations with the 'Rocket Man' singer about doing a duet.

Snippets were played on social media in the lead-up to the song officially dropping on streaming services around the world today (August 26).

Fans have understandably gone wild that they're hearing new Britney Spears music after there were fears she would leave the industry entirely.

One fan wrote: "Thanks for everything Britney! You are unique and for us fans it is an unspeakable pleasure to see you back in music."

Another added: "You deserve the world, queen. So happy for your journey towards freedom & happiness. We’ve all got your back & we’re all rooting for you."

A third went all out and said: "When I hear 'Hold Me Closer' for the first time I want it to send me into a state of shock but also ecstasy! Like I want my eyes to roll back and have myself walk backwards on my hands and legs giving exorcist vibes."

That's certainly a vibe.
