Whoopi Goldberg wants to host Wheel of Fortune after Pat Sajak leaves

Sajak has revealed he will no longer host the incredible series after 40 years in the top spot.

Whoopi Goldberg has put herself in the running to host Wheel of Fortune after Pat Sajak leaves.

Yesterday (14 June), the legendary TV host, 76, announced that 'the time has come' to retire from the US show after more than 40 years presenting.

Sajak began hosting the Wheel of Fortune in 1981 and became the longest-running host of a game show in 2018.

"Well, the time has come. I've decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last," the presenter wrote on Twitter last night.

"It's been a wonderful ride, and I'll have more to say in the coming months.

"Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it’ll keep the clickbait sites busy!)"

It will be a tough act to follow for whoever fills his shoes.

However, it seems that Goldberg, 67, would love to give it a go.

Pat Sajak announced his plan to depart the show.

The panel of The View, who were recently joined by Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings, asked for his thoughts on the situation.

“Well, Pat’s a legend, I mean, over 40 years?” Jennings, 49, said. “And the price of a vowel has not gone up one penny, I mean, no one controls inflation like Pat Sajak.”

“I mean, ‘Jeopardy!’ had its own succession crisis. Hopefully ‘Wheel’s’ got an envelope somewhere that says, ‘What to do when Pat packs it in.'”

Joy Behar then jumped in to say that the Color Purple star 'wants that job'.

To which Goldberg confirmed, saying: “I want that job,” adding it would be 'lots of fun'.

Sajak has had many legendary moments on the show, including the time he dropped his cards after a contestant's awkward answer.

On a 2022 episode of Wheel of Fortune, contestant Kate had just 10 seconds to complete her challenge.

She was attempting complete the puzzle for the phrase 'fixing a leak'.

Her guesses were pretty close with 'moving a leaf' and 'raking a leaf', but the 10 second buzzer rang and she was all out of ideas.

Sajak said: "'Leaf' was not the word."

A stumped looking Kate was then presented with the correct phrase 'fixing a leak' and her face lit up with frustration because she was so close, kind of.

Shortly after came the awkwardness, as the host was simply not expecting the words to come out of Kate's mouth.

The Cincinnati woman failed her puzzle and inadvertently created a moment of TV gold.

"I kept thinking of doing something else with a leak and I didn't think that was it," she said.

After her insinuated toilet joke threw the audience into hysterics, the host simply replied: "No," as he stared down the camera lens.

Sajak drops his cards on the floor in embarrassment as Kate awkwardly covers her face.

"Excuse me," the host said into the camera. "These get heavy sometimes."
