Stranger Things fans no longer have to worry about the upcoming season being the last we see of the show, because Netflix has officially ordered an animated version.

Ever since Mike, Dustin, Will, Lucas and El first captured the world's hearts seven years ago, Stranger Things has only got better and better.

Scenes from the most recent season of the sci-fi series were hailed by many as being among the most brilliant and iconic in the show's history, but with the fifth and final season looming, fans were dreading having to wave goodbye to the world - both Upside Down and right-way up.

The fifth season of Stranger Things will be the last.

Star David Harbour has been among those admitting that it was time for the live-action series to finish, as he noted the show's stars as 'growing up' and getting too old to be playing the teen characters, but Netflix has now decided that doesn't have to mean the end for Stranger Things.

The creators of the show, the Duffer brothers, have confirmed there will be an animated series coming our way, with Variety reporting that the streaming service has ordered the series set within the world of Stranger Things and developed by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions.

The Duffer brothers are acting as executive produce via Upside Down Pictures, working along with Robles of Flying Bark, as well as Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps.

Commenting on the exciting news in a statement, the Duffer brothers said: “We’ve always dreamed of an animated ‘Stranger Things’ in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling.

"We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with - the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”

Robles is no stranger to animated shows, having previously created Random! Cartoons, Fanboy & Chum Chum, and Glitch Techs.

Details about the animated series have not yet been released.

Exact details about the animated show are currently under wraps, but hopefully it won't be long before we learn more about what - and who - it will entail.

The mystery surrounding the new show at least hasn't stopped fans getting excited for it, with one relying on Caps Lock to express their delight as they commented: "I WILL BE WATCHING."

As for the existing Stranger Things series, we don't yet have a release date for season five, but hopefully it will be worth the wait.
