Orlando Bloom thought he was going to ‘die’ while pushing his body’s limits for movie role

Orlando Bloom thought he was going to ‘die’ while pushing his body’s limits for movie role

The actor spoke about his 'tuna and cucumber' phase

Orlando Bloom has opened up how he thought he ‘was gonna die’ whilst filming his latest film.

The actor, who is best known for playing Will Turner in The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been though an astounding body transformation which saw him ending up looking like ‘a raisin’.

Bloom’s new movie, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday September 5, saw him lose an enormous amount of weight for his role.

He spoke to People about it, explaining how it was a ‘taxing’ role and he ‘literally thought [he] was gonna die’ at one point during filming his scenes.

It got so bad that even his fiancé, singer Katy Perry ‘freaked out’ over it.

All this work was for his new film, The Cut, which hasn’t currently got a distributor or release date.

The film follows a ‘retired fighter obsessed with getting back in the ring — even if it costs him his life’, which shows Bloom’s shocking body transformation at the beginning before he gradually gains weight.

The reason he needs to lose weight is that in the film, his boxer character is out of commission after a nasty fight. Then ten years later, another boxer unexpectedly dies before a title fight, which means there’s an opening for a replacement.

Bloom’s character then puts himself forward as a replacement, but he has to lose a lot of weight in just six days to make 'the cut'.

Explaining how it made him feel, he said to People: “I was very hangry.”

I think we’d all be hangry too.

He added: “The last three weeks in London, before we started filming, were just tuna and cucumber.”

Apparently, the nutritionist on set had him on a ‘strict regime’ which was supposed ‘to tear [him] down’ so he could begin the film as skinny as possible.

Bloom said: “And then I put on weight as we filmed."

When seeing what was happening to her hubby to be, Perry ‘just was freaked out’.

He explained: “She watched it and was like, ‘I need a stiff drink.’

“She was really moved. She knew what it took.”

According to the actor, Perry was highly supportive of him while he was filming and held down the fort at home with their daughter, Daisy Dove.

He said: “She was there throughout, with the kids and stuff.

“It’s hard for your family.”

Caitriona Balfe, who co-stars with Bloom as the wife and trainer of his character, seemed to sympathise with his situation.

She said: “You can do stuff like that when you're on your own, it's one thing about being single. We were all younger before we had families [and] you can kind of throw yourself into something. But when you have to come home, and you have to be a parent.”

Balfe added: “The transformation was shocking… I was like, ‘You look like a raisin.’”

With a ‘gaunt’ face, Bloom was then tasked with gaining all of the weight back so he could show progress throughout the movie.
