A prequel to the 'best show ever made' is landing on HBO very soon, making now the ideal time to re-watch the original.
2026 is set to be a big year, not only for movies but also for the smaller screen. Shows including Euphoria, The Pitt, and Bridgerton are set return for new seasons, keeping us occupied throughout the year.
Following up on the roaring success of a TV series is no easy task, but seven years after its conclusion, HBO is giving it a shot.
The 'best show ever made,' is none other than Game of Thrones, the popular fantasy drama created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
Set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, the story revolves around rival noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne and the Seven Kingdoms.
Game of Thrones concluded in 2019 (HBO) The show ran on HBO for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, helping to boost the careers of stars including Kit Harrington, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams. It became one of the most influential and widely watched TV phenomena of the 2010s, winning an incredible 59 Emmys across its seasons.
Fans have rated it a 9.2 on IMDB, with some branding the first few seasons 'practically perfect'.
Meanwhile, others went so far as to call it the 'best TV show ever made,' but some disagreed because of its divisive final season, which a few described as 'disappointing'.
Since GOT's conclusion, HBO have dipped their toes in the world of Westeros with House of the Dragon, which takes place 200 years before the main show, and follows the Targaryen civil war known as the 'Dance of the Dragons' between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and her half-brother, Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney).
And later this month, before HOTD's third season makes its debut later this year, another eight-part GOT prequel is set to air, with HBO doing the honors of airing the show once more.
The new series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms lands mid-January (HBO) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by Martin.
Set roughly 90 years before the events of GOT and 80 years after HOTD, still in Westeros, the story focuses on the adventures of a humble hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire Prince Aegon Targaryen, aka Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), long before Egg ascends to the Iron Throne as King Aegon V.
Their quests take them across the Seven Kingdoms, where the pair battle with the unforgiving realities of medieval life.
Expect a slightly more wholesome tale than the original show - with way fewer dragons and t*ts, too.
In November, months before its premiere, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was greenlit for a second season, expected to be released in 2027.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms drops on HBO on Sunday (January 18).
All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are streaming now on HBO.
