People are flooding to social media in excitement over news of Jack Black joining the cast of the live-action Minecraft movie.

The upcoming 2025 release based on the much-loved video game which took up many of our childhoods - and just as many adulthoods if we're really being honest - is set to star Aquaman's Jason Momoa, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) and The IT Crowd's Matt Berry.

And who should be joining the already star-studded cast but School of Rock legend Jack Black.

The film is written by Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer and Markus Persson.

It was originally meant to be directed by Shawn Levy, but is now being taken on by Jared Hess - best known for 2004 release Napoleon Dynamite.

The production companies tied to the project include Warner Bros., Mojang, Vertigo Entertainment, Legendary Entertainment and Microsoft Studios.

The list of producers include Cale Boyter, Jon Berg, the late Jill Messick, Mary Parent, Momoa, Roy Lee, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui, as per Deadline. And the movie's executive producers are Brian Mendoza, Kayleen Walters, Jonathan Spaihts and Todd Hallowell.

The official synopsis reads: "The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld."

According to IMDB, the movie is currently in production.

Deadline was the first to report the news Black is joining the cast, with the outlet citing sources saying the 54-year-old will be taking on the role of Steve.

And Black has since taken to his Instagram page to share a photograph which seemingly confirms the rumors.

The picture shows the actor wearing glasses, glancing down and reading a book titled: "Minecraft Basics for dummies."

The caption reads: "An actor prepares."

The actor seemingly confirmed the rumors.

Fans of Black and Minecraft have flooded to the actor's post in excitement of the news of him joining the stellar cast.

One Instagram user said: "I'm into it."

"Best video game movie ever incoming," another added.

A third commented: "JACK BLACK IS STEVE RAAAAAAHHHHHHHH."

"2024 is starting with a banger," a fourth said.

And a final resolved: "Had 0 hopes for this film until now. Jack Black will carry so hard."

And it's not the first time Black has been involved in a live-action remake of a popular game either, the actor taking to the screen as Bowser last year in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Despite the meagre Rotten Tomatoes reviews, the film had the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated movie.

So, we'll just have to wait and see how the Minecraft movie compares.

The film is slated to be released on April 4, 2025.
