The first trailer for the new Wonka movie has just dropped.

Check it out here:

Up until now, fans have been kept very much in the dark as to what to expect from the long-awaited musical, with the behind-the-scenes images not giving much away regarding the plot.

The movie will take us back to before the events of Roald Dahl’s classic novel, serving as a prequel following the rise of the titular chocolatier, played by Timothée Chalamet.

Chalamet will be the third actor to portray Willy Wonka after Gene Wilder in 1971's Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory's Johnny Depp in 2005.

So, he has some pretty big shoes to fill.

Speaking previously about his part and the reaction to the photo we saw of him in character, the Call Me By Your Name star said: "You know what's really funny about that is it's so misleading. This movie is so sincere, it's so joyous.

"I hate to say it, but the dream as an artist is to throw whatever the f**k you want at the wall, you know?

"And I guess what I'm realising is that one's personal life, one's adult life, can be quite boring and the artist's life can still be extraordinary."

Chalamet also told British Vogue that he had several musical numbers in the film, which he described as 'so sincere' and 'so joyous'.

Wonka has been directed by Paul King, and as well as Chalamet, boasts a plethora of Hollywood stars, including Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Mathew Baynton, and Matt Lucas.

And, perhaps more incredibly, fans will also get to see Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa.

It all sounds pretty wild, with his casting being revealed during CinemaCon 2023 at the Warner Bros presentation, with the trailer being shown to convention audiences.

And the trailer has had a great reception on social media so far.

Over on YouTube, one viewer wrote: “Looks so good! Timothy is such a skilled actor...he can play anything and makes it look effortless! Can't wait!”

While a second film fan shared: “Directed and written by the man who made paddington? It's gonna be a masterpiece.”

A third said: "This looks so whimsical, I absolutely love it."

And a fourth shocked viewer said: “I never thought a Willy Wonka movie would look this good.”

Wonka will be released December 15, 2023.
