Netflix fans have been moved by a mini-series based on a true story which has earned a near-perfect 98 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Robert De Niro's '10/10' political thriller Zero Day and the streamer's three-part Gabby Petito documentary are currently storming the US charts, there are some TV shows from a few years back which may have slipped under your radar.

And while it's been described as 'heart-wrenching', its incredibly important story really shines through, according to critics.

This one stars Apple Cider Vinegar's Kaitlyn Dever and was inspired by a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 article about a series of rapes in the states of Washington and Colorado.

Dever takes on the role of Marie, a young woman who reports a rape and yet is treated like a criminal for it.

Marie is charged for reporting the crime, but when two female detectives - played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever - are tasked with attempting to identify a serial rapist who fits Marie's descriptions, could she finally be taken seriously?

The eight-episode series - called Unbelievable - was first released in 2019, but is still only just being discovered by fans now.

Check out its trailer below:

Unbelievable earned an astonishing 98 percent score from Rotten Tomatoes critics, who describe it as 'heartbreaking and powerful'.

"Unbelievable transcends familiar true-crime beats by shifting its gaze to survivors of abuse, telling their stories with grace and gravity," the critics' consensus reads.

One reviewer added: "Unbelievable still manages to make this harrowing real-life story into a compelling fictionalized account, one that will make for a fulfilling binge-watch."

Another said: "One of the most comprehensive and involving examinations of crime ever presented on either the big or small screen."

Over on the Netflix Bangers Facebook group, fans have been quick to recommend the miniseries.

"So heart wrenching but powerful. The lead actress is way underrated. She was incredible," one person wrote.

A second hailed it 'one of the best mini-series of all time' as a third commented: "I watched it a while back and I can't even explain my emotions through the whole show. I was EVERYWHERE."

Unbelievable is available to stream now on Netflix.
