Director James Cameron has revealed that he made Avatars blue for a very good reason and it actually makes a lot of sense.

Cameron, 68, made the revelation during an interview with MTV, where he explained that it was important for Avatars to have a strong sense of 'otherness' as skin colour is 'such a big issue on our planet'.

The director explained that all of the other obvious skin tone colours existed here on earth, and at the time of the first film in 2009, the colour green was a cliché when it came to aliens.

It, therefore, makes sense that Cameron opted for blue as his choice of colour, although no explanation has been given (yet) as to why it sparkles - although we have to admit it does make the Avatars look ethereal.

"We had big blue women, not little green men," Cameron said of his creation.

The revelation about the Avatars comes ahead of the release of the sequel to the 2009 film, Avatar: The Way of Water, which is being released on 16 December.

Its trailer, featured above, just dropped today (2 November), and it's safe to say that it looks like one sequel that's been well worth the wait.

The film's official synopsis reads: "Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their planet."

The Avatar sequel looks like it's well worth the 13-year wait.
Disney

Avatar and Disney fans alike have been taken to social media to express their excitement about the upcoming film, which Cameron has confirmed will be one of a number of future films set in the Avatar world.

Reacting to the trailer, one fan gushed: "After seeing this trailer, I'm even more aware that I will love this movie as much as I love Avatar 1, and that it will be equally special to me.

"Can't wait for December to see this sequel I've been waiting and dreaming of!"

"Amazing trailer now I am 100 times more excited for this movie," added a second.

"Absolutely stunning," wrote a third while a fourth remarked: "Can't wait for this one."

Zoë Yadira Saldaña-Perego, the actress behind Neytiri, said that she cried just 20 minutes into watching the new film.

She remembered: "I can get choked up just talking about it because I was able to see just 20 minutes of the second instalment right before the year ended, last year.

"And I was speechless, I was moved to tears."
