James Cameron is about to be the king of the world once more: the first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water is here.

Avatar is still the biggest movie in the world. It's unlikely it'll ever be dethroned. Sure, Avengers: Endgame briefly took the top spot, but all it took was a quick trip back to cinemas for normal business to resume.

Yet, despite it being a full-blown, certifiable phenomenon, it's a movie that's invited much mockery over the past decade. For some reason, it's not very cool to love Avatar. Well, the doubters and critics are about to get a harsh reminder: you never bet against Cameron.

The official synopsis for the sequel reads: "Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together.

"However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora. When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans."

It's been a long, difficult journey for Avatar 2. It was originally set for release in 2014, five years after the original film's release. Alas, it seemed to find itself delayed ad infinitum amid technical challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amazingly though, this is only the first of three other planned sequels: reportedly, the third, fourth and fifth instalments will be titled Avatar: The Seed Bearer, Avatar: The Tulkun Rider and Avatar: The Quest for Eywa respectively.

As the title suggests, the sequel will be vastly set in, around or underwater - another reason for the film's continual delays. It's a brief teaser, but the aqua-visuals are beyond anything we've seen on the big screen thus far.

At CinemaCon, where the teaser was initially revealed, Cameron said: "[We're] pushing limits even farther with high frame rate, higher resolution 3D and greater reality in our visual effects.

"I wanted our return to Pandora to be something really special. Every shot is designed for the biggest screen, highest resolution and most immersive 3D available. I think we pulled it off."

The director is still 'hard at work putting the final touches on the film', but from just two minutes, it seems we're set for another sensation later this year.

Stephen Lang, who's returning as Colonel Miles Quaritch, told EW: "I think [fans will] be enchanted and fascinated. Look, there are people who are going to just adore this world."

Avatar: The Way of Water is due for release on December 16.
