A woman has divided the internet after getting down on one knee to her boyfriend.

Traditionally it's a man who proposes to their partner, but this woman took it upon herself to ask her beau to be her husband.

Her sweet gesture leaves her in the minority, however; a 2017 study found that just 61 women out of 12,657 brides were the ones to pop the question, according to The Knot.

The video of the moment she asked her partner has been shared online and quickly went viral.

In the clip, the girlfriend - seen in a lovely red dress - guides her blindfolded boyfriend to a table that's been set up for them overlooking Australia's Sydney Harbour Bridge.

It then skips to the moment she gets down on one knee, with her boyfriend going on to say yes.

Placing a ring on his finger, she gets up and the pair hug one another.

The proposal took place on October 27, with the video being uploaded to Personalised Proposals & Co's Instagram a couple of days later.

The clip has since gone viral as dozens of people, women in particular, shared their thoughts on the idea of a woman getting down on one knee.

One comment which has garnered over 15,000 likes read: "I’d rather wrestle a shark in Sydney harbour than get on one knee for a man."

"I'd clean the entire house with a Q-Tip before I did that," said another female Instagram user.

A third added: "Do you see that bridge? If you look closely, you can see me jumping off from secondhand embarrassment."

"That’s going to be her whole life. Begging him," a different person penned.

But others had no issue with the idea of a the woman being the one to propose to their partner in a heterosexual relationship.

Someone argued: "These comments are NOT it. This woman found someone she loves unconditionally and would do anything for. So she proposed. I hope one day you all find someone you are be willing to serve and support, and receive that love equally in return.

"A man’s shoulders can only carry so much. They are still human. They have emotions. They need to feel love and be nurtured as well."

Echoing similar sentiments, someone else said: "You don’t know their story. How does a woman proposing to her man make any difference in your life? Be gone with all that negativity."
