A woman has sparked controversy online after posting a video explaining why she thinks men should pay for the first date.

Elle McNamara, from the UK, goes by the username @BambiDoesBeauty on social media and took to TikTok to vent over the debate of who should pay on first dates.

In the video, she started by showing off the cost of her make-up routine.

This was captioned as a 'get ready with me' video - a common trend where people show off their routine before they go out.

In this case, Elle also included the cost of all of the products that she was using during the routine.

And these were not cheap products either, with the total cost of all of the products running into the hundreds.

In fact, the total cost of all the products that Elle used to get ready on a flight came to just over £233, which is around $296.

But it was her caption to the video which has got people talking, as that relates to etiquette on a first date.

Elle captioned the video: "GRWM whilst I tell you why men should pay on the first date."

Elle shared why she thinks men should pay for the first date.

The video was overlaid with a song by iconic French singer Edith Piaf, but as for telling us why men should pay, Elle herself didn't say a word.

Instead, the cost of each item of makeup was broken down on the screen before the final price came up at the end.

The implication of course is that because of the money women spend on beauty products they'll wear on the date, men should pay for the first date itself.

But people pointed out there were some flaws in this logic.

The main one was that the costs in the video were for the entire pack or tube of makeup, whereas the amount used on one evening out would be significantly less.

People took to the comments to share their views, and they weren't impressed.

She included the total cost of the make-up she was wearing.

One wrote: "Complete disagree with this cause we choose to buy and wear makeup. And one use wouldn’t equal the whole amount of purchasing it But you are GLOWING!"

Another made a similar point, writing: "I hope this is a joke. you're not wearing £233 worth of make up. that would mean you've used it all up for one look which obviously is not the case."

A third echoed the same sentiment, commenting: "Makeup costs that for the entire product unopened, then that same makeup is used to go out with friends or events or family.

"This literally makes no sense. use 40p worth of foundation so pay for meal?"

Also, men like to wear makeup sometimes too!
