A centenarian has opened up about the three things everyone should do to try and live a long and healthy life, and they seem pretty achievable.

While we all know there is no such thing as immortality, no matter how many fantasy books you may read, there are certain lifestyle habits you can adopt in order to live a long and healthy life. Exercise, well-balanced meals and laughter, as well as cutting out bad habits, can all help in the long run.

But according to 111-year-old Luis Cano, who recently celebrated another birthday and wears his age as a badge of honor, there are three things everyone must do.

He is now believed to be the oldest man living in America, and has shared his secrets in an interview with Fox 5 News.

The veteran, who originates from Colombia and now lives in New Jersey, said living in America is an 'accomplishment of a lifetime', and in order to enjoy it for as long as possible, he told Fox 5: "Don't drink, always get a good sleep and don't smoke."

Luis also shared some advice on how to live a good life, playfully saying 'behave well'.

He was born on December 9, 1914, and still lives in his home in Linden with two of his children. He spends most of his time looking out the window and reflecting on his life. Or watching airplanes, a lifelong interest - which he can now sit and watch from his home - and he's always loved fishing too.

Luis said he is 'grateful' to be surrounded by his family, who take care of him at his old age, and it makes him happy to know he is now the oldest man living in America.

Joining the Colombian army when he was young, Luis didn't receive an education, but after serving in the military, he started up his own bus fleet company, helping people move across rural locations in the South American country.

He and his wife, Alicia, moved to the US in the 90s, where they welcomed 10 children together. Alicia sadly died in 2004, but Luis has now managed to meet 11 of his grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren - who are all immensely proud of him.

It's believed the world's oldest man is currently João Marinho Neto, from Brazil who is 113 and was born in 1912. The oldest man to ever live was Jiroemon Kimura (1897-2013) from Japan, who lived to the age of 116.

Who is the oldest person in the world?

According to LongeviQuest, the oldest living person is a British woman called Ethel Caterham, at 116 years old. She is followed by:

  • Naomi Whitehead (US) - 115
  • Lucia Laura Sangenito (Italy) - 115
  • Yolanda Beltrão de Azevedo (Brazil) - 115
  • Shigeko Kagawa (Japan) - 114
  • Beatriz Ferreira Duarte (Brazil) - 114
