Taylor Swift was surprisingly booed while minding her business at the Super Bowl, but fans think they have pieced together why this was.

The 35-year-old singer appeared to mouth 'What is going on?' to friend and rapper Ice Spice, who accompanied her to the game - where boyfriend Travis Kelce was competing with the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles.

When the camera panned to Swift and was subsequently shown on the big screen in the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, a large portion of the 75-000 strong crowd started jeering.

Swift isn't exactly controversial, so why was she subject to a barrage of abuse?

Well, fans on Twitter believe they may have the answer.

"Eagles fans are booing her. She’s originally from Philly area but obviously rooting for Travis and chiefs," one person said.

While another added: "The booos are from eagles fans aka the opposite team she supports this is normal."

Some users though couldn't fathom why Swift would be subject to jeers

"What I don't understand is why people booed at Taylor Swift? Like she was doing literally nothing and she's just there to show support to Travis Kelce and see the game, it's not like they're going to make a Gabriella-Troy scene in High School Musical 3," one person typed.

Meanwhile, someone else hilariously wrote: "Boyfriend: I can’t believe they haven’t showed Taylor Swift yet. Me: I heard that they showed a shot of her in the stadium and she got booed. Boyfriend: Why’d she get booed? Me: Um, the Philadelphia Eagles are playing her boyfriend’s team. These are the same fans that booed Santa Claus.

    "Anyway, go birds."

While Swift was booed by the crowd, President Donald Trump was not.

In fact, he was loudly cheered as he made history as the first ever sitting US president to attend the Super Bowl.

Trump and Swift have a little history themselves, as the 78-year-old took to his social media platform Truth Social during his presidential campaign last year.

He simply wrote: "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!"

His post came after the singer urged her fans to use their vote any way they would like, while also informing them she would be voting for Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Swift's decision to let her fans know her political swaying came after Trump's campaign team were duped when they posted a fake AI-generated photo of her saying she was voting for the Republican.
