Anne Hathaway holds back tears as she rewatches The Princess Diaries and explains why it's made her so emotional

Anne Hathaway starred as Mia Thermopolis in the Disney classic

Way before Anne Hathaway was Catwoman, Grand High Witch, and Andrea Sachs, she was Mia Thermopolis.

Hathaway was just 17 years old when she starred as Princess Mia in the well-loved movie, The Princess Diaries.

The Disney film propelled her into the spotlight, and she's since had a host of huge acting gigs.

Arguably her most successful film to date was 2012's Les Misérables, which landed Hathaway with a series of highly sought after awards, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe.

Now 41, Hathaway reminisced over some of her biggest films to date in an interview with Vanity Fair.

Of course, this included The Princess Diaries, which went on to get a sequel.

Both films starred Hollywood royalty and Marry Poppins herself, Julie Andrews.

In the video shared to Vanity Fair's Instagram, Hathaway is rewatching the scene her character Mia undergoes a huge transformation.

"I was 17 years old when we made this, and so I hadn't met as many people yet in my life," she said after pausing the film to note how 'radiant' Andrews looked.

"So I knew Garry Marshall was really special and I knew Julie Andrews was really special. But now sitting here watching this from this point of view, they're two of the most magical people I have ever met."

Marshall directed both The Princess Diaries one and two.

"This was the film that changed my life," Hathaway went on. "It's so weird to watch it. I haven't seen this movie in nearly 20 years."

"I'm a little bit speechless," continued the actress as she became overcome with emotion.

Continuing to chat about her breakout role as Princess Mia, Hathaway held back tears and shared how 'proud' she was to be part of the project.

"I'm really glad I got to be that girl right there," she added while pointing at screen.

The Princess Diaries fans were equally moved by Hathaway reminiscing about the movie.

Someone said: "Our forever princess!!"

"That's the queen of Genovia right there," added another, while someone else hailed the movie as a 'timeless classic'.

"I just hope we can all look back at what we did in earlier years with the pride and feeling of accomplishment that @annehathaway is," gushed someone else.

Others campaigned in the comments section for a third Princess Diaries - and we might just be getting one.

Back in 2019, Hathaway teased that there was a script for a third movie, adding that 'we all really want it to happen'.

However, as of last year, Andrews said there weren't any updates to give.

We can only hope...
