Kanye West has had his Instagram account temporarily suspended after using a racial slur against The Daily Show host Trevor Noah.

Instagram confirmed it had locked the account of Kanye – legally known as Ye – for 24 hours after he violated parent company Meta's hate speech policies.

It came after the rapper launched an attack on Noah, repeatedly calling him a 'k**n' – a slang word said to be for a Black person who is anti-Black – following segment on The Daily Show that saw Noah talk candidly about his thoughts on Kanye's harassment of his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her new partner Pete Davidson.

In the clip, Noah described Kanye's behaviour towards his former partner as 'terrifying to watch', and said that he feels that the rapper's ongoing and 'escalating' harassment 'speaks to a wider conversation' about the repercussions women often face when trying to leave unhealthy relationships.

In response, Kanye took to Instagram to share a screenshot of Noah's Google results page, with a caption referring to the lyrics of the hymn Kumbaya, My Lord, in which he replaced the first word with the racial slur.

Kanye's account has since been locked, TMZ reports, and the post deleted. Before it was, however, Noah commented on the post, sharing a response to the incident in which he spoke of his difficulties seeing the rapper's behaviour as a long time fan of his work, The Independent reports.

'There are few artists who have had more of an impact on me than you Ye. You took samples and turned them into symphonies,' Noah wrote. 'You’re an indelible part of my life Ye. Which is why it breaks my heart to see you like this. I don’t care if you support Trump and I don’t care if you roast Pete. I do however care when I see you on a path that’s dangerously close to peril and pain.'

Addressing the use of the slur against him, the comedian said, 'Oh and as for K**n…clearly some people graduate but we still stupid.'

'Don’t ever forget, the biggest trick racists ever played on black people was teaching us to strip each other of our blackness whenever we disagree. Tricking us into dividing ourselves up into splinters so that we would never unite into a powerful rod.'

Kanye's original message has since been deleted, however a Meta spokesperson confirmed that his account had been suspended for 24 hours for violating the company's policy on 'hate speech and bullying and harassment'.
