Sir Elton John has 'quit' Twitter following Elon Musk's purchase of the site.

The music legend says that he cannot continue to use the social media site, claiming that policy changes have allowed misinformation to run rampant.

In a post to his account, the 75-year-old hit out at Twitter's new owner over his handling of it.

He wrote: "All my life I’ve tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world.

"I’ve decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent change in policy which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked."

Since the post was shared, it has been been liked over 260,000 times, with thousands of people piling into the comments to either show some support or question what he means by 'misinformation'.

One of the first people to get involved in the debate was Musk himself.

He wrote: "I love your music. Hope you come back. Is there any misinformation in particular that you’re concerned about?"

Since he took over the company, Musk has made quite a few changes to how things are run, such as rolling back its covid misinformation policy.

The five-strike rule, which was born out of the pandemic, saw accounts suspended for spreading false information about the disease, vaccines, transmission, etc.

Musk has also reinstated former US president Donald Trump, controversial professor Jordan Peterson and conspiracy theorist congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

And the tech billionaire recently introduced 'Twitter Blue', which allows people to pay $8 a month to get the coveted blue tick, the roll-out of which was beset by problems.

Not everyone has taken Elon Musk's tenure as Twitter boss very well.

As well as Sir Elton, a number of other celebrities have also quit the site, including Jim Carrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Gigi Hadid.

And Alyssa Milano said recently that she gave back her Tesla after Musk completed his $44 billion takeover of Twitter.

    The

Announcing the news in a tweet, ironically, she said: "I gave back my Tesla. I bought the VW ev. I love it.

"I’m not sure how advertisers can buy space on Twitter.

"Publicly traded company’s products being pushed in alignment with hate and white supremacy doesn’t seem to be a winning business model."

Milano later elaborated on her decision during an appearance on The View, saying it was, in part, due to sexual misconduct allegations made against the SpaceX founder that emerged earlier this year.

She explained: "Also, I'm so annoyed with all of these billionaires, with the exception of a few, but especially Elon Musk.

"You buy Twitter to destroy it for forty billion dollars, right? Forty billion dollars... imagine if he donated that money to UNICEF."
