Danny DeVito gives shoutout to his estranged wife Rhea Perlman at the Emmys

The pair married in 1982 after meeting in the early seventies

Danny DeVito gave a shoutout to his estranged wife and fellow actor, Rhea Perlman, at this year's Emmy Awards.

DeVito, 79, praised Perlman while appearing on stage with the cast of 2005 sitcom, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Joking about the lack of Emmys that the show had received, DeVito could be heard cheerleading his wife's achievements while presenting the award for Outstanding Talk Series.

You can watch the moment below:

DeVito and Perlman married in 1982 after meeting in the early seventies.

The couple announced they would be separating back in October 2012, but ended up reconciling the following year.

It wasn't meant to be however, with the pair splitting for good a few years later in 2017.

It seems the actors are still hugely supportive of each other though, with Perlman appearing at the awards show alongside DeVito.

And the Matilda actor gave his former wife a cute nod, praising her accolades during her time on show, Cheers.

On stage with Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson, the co-stars discussed how DeVito's show, Taxi had received 34 Emmy nominations in five years, meanwhile It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia had received zero since it was released in 2005.

Shouting out his wife, DeVito said: "Rhea won four for Cheers."

Despite their split, they have always remained in close contact, and share three children together - Lucy, Grace and Jake DeVito.

Perlman, 75, has spoken about their relationship in the past, explaining that the pair have no plans to divorce.

"We are still married," she told Julia Louis-Dreyfus last year, in an episode of podcast, Wiser Than Me.

“And we are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us.”

In an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Perlman added: “I don’t know why it’s difficult for other people, but Danny and I have always loved each other and we have three amazing children together.

“We really agree on almost everything important.

“You know, we were together for 40 years. 40 years is a long time. You might have to do something else!”

When the couple split, Perlman explained that it was 'very difficult' at first.

“It was very difficult at first. And there were a lot of reasons that we separated, which I’m not gonna go into. But it took time for us to come to this somehow pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other," she said.

“But I don’t think I would’ve ever given up my relationship for it. And I didn’t.”
