Avril Lavigne Has Got Engaged To An Actual Sk8er Boi

Avril Lavigne told us all she'd end up with a 'Sk8r Boi' all the way back in 2002, and two decades on she's brought her song to life by getting engaged to actual skateboarder and rapper Mod Sun.

The pop star shared news of her engagement on Instagram yesterday (7 April), with images snapped during the moment Mod Sun popped the question in Paris towards the end of last month.

The rapper could be seen down on one knee with the Eiffel Tower in the background as Avril smiled at him from above, and follow-up images show the couple grinning happily as the singer showed off her diamond ring.

Alongside the images, Avril wrote (translated): "Yes! I love you forever. Sunday. 27. March. 2022."

The news was met with comments of excitement and congratulations, with some fans jokingly making reference to Avril's 2002 song.

Quoting the 'Sk8r Boi' lyrics, one comment read: "He was a boy, you were a girl. Can I make it anymore obvious? Congratulations!!"

I'm sure I don't need to relay the story told in 'Sk8r Boi' to you, but just in case it wasn't the soundtrack to your childhood, here's a quick summary. There was a skater boy who had a crush on a girl who did ballet, but she didn't want to admit her feelings because 'all of her friends, stuck up their nose, they had a problem with his baggy clothes'. Of course.

The ballet dancer grew up to be a single mum and turns on the TV to see the skater boy 'slammin' on his guitar', but of course it was too late by then because he'd moved on to Avril.

Though that probably isn't quite the backstory of Mod Sun, he does at least fit the description of skater boy, having previously explained he 'used to skate every day as a kid' but grew out of the habit after his 'music started to take off'. He shared a video of himself in 2019 getting back into the sport, explaining he had recently been filling his time with 'things [he's] loved all [his] life'.

Avril and Mod Sun started dating in December 2020 after working together on Mod Sun's track 'Flames'. The rapper later indicated the seriousness of the relationship by having Avril's name tattooed on his neck.

Mod Sun also took to Instagram to share pictures from the engagement, saying in the caption he knew Avril was 'the one' from the 'day [they] met'.
