Jaw-dropping footage has emerged of a fisherman’s terrifying encounter with an anaconda.

In 1997’s Anaconda, a National Geographic crew finds themselves taken hostage by a hunter tracking down the world’s largest – and deadliest – snake. It’s safe to say, it doesn’t really go that well for them.

Fast-forward to 2022, and it seems people aren’t as scared of them as they probably should be. In a clip shared online, a fisherman appears to catch an anaconda – and laughs as it tries to slither away into the water.

For reference, the anaconda is the largest snake in the world, capable of lengths of up to 30ft, and weighing up to 550lb. They’re generally found in swamps, marshes and slow-moving streams in the tropical rain forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins.

Most frighteningly, they’re non-venomous constrictors, so they consume prey like wild pigs, deer, birds, turtles, capybara, caimans, and even jaguars by coiling themselves round them and squeezing tight until they suffocate. Then, using their stretchy ligaments, they swallow their prey whole. Basically, they’d love to eat you for breakfast, but attacks are really rare.

Yet, despite the stakes of pestering an anaconda, the people in this clip can’t get enough of the jollity. ‘He’s just f*cking with it to get it on video. Locals know how to safely deal with these snakes… also this isn’t a snake that will even hurt you, there’s virtually no recorded deaths from it,’ one user reacted.

‘Suddenly Australia doesn’t seem so bad now does it! At least we don’t have those c*nts,’ another joked.

The footage actually dates back to 2014, and three Brazilians ended up getting fined $600 each for harassing the snake along the Santa Maria River. ‘For those who don’t know, the snake had just eaten and if a snake experiences significant stress it can force itself to regurgitate its meal in order to get away,’ one Redditor further explained.

‘The problem is that regurgitating a meal of this size might actually kill the snake. Anacondas are a revered species throughout the Amazon and harming them is a no-no. In many folklore and tribal legends the anaconda is referred to as the ‘water mother’ and is said to have carved the Amazon. They’re a big deal.’
