Denmark is seemingly playing Donald Trump at his own game.

President Trump recently had a rather heated phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, where the pair are believed to have discussed the prospect of America acquiring Greenland — a suggestion that went down like a lead balloon with the Danes.

But Trump has branded it an 'absolute necessity' to buy the island.

"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," he penned on Truth Social.

“Greenland is an incredible place. The people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, cherish it, from a very vicious outside World.

"MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!"

However, Greenland’s prime minister, Mute Egede, has made it 'very clear' that the Denmark territory 'is not for sale and will not be in the future'.

In the wake of Trump's unpopular suggestion of the US buying Greenland, someone has made a joke petition that calls for Denmark to purchase California — one of America's largest states which has a population of around 38 million people.

As of today (Thursday, February 13), the petition that's titled 'Let’s Buy California from Trump – Denmark’s Next Big Adventure' has garnered over 244,000 signatures.

The bio for the petition reads: "Have you ever looked at a map and thought, 'You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.' Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Let’s buy California from Donald Trump!

"Yes, you heard that right. California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen.

"It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation," the petition goes on. "So California will become New Denmark. Los Angeles? More like Løs Ångeles."

The petition's thought to have been created by civil tech activist Xåvier Dutoit, who spoke to the Newsweek about why he set it up.

Apparently Dutoit was in a bar when he overheard 'a rather annoying discussion of a MAGA-adjacent American that couldn't quite understand how insane the Greenland proposal is'.

So, to demonstrate the 'neocolonialism obscenity' of Trump's suggestion, he created the now-viral petition.

Dutoit's page aims to crowdfund a $1 trillion to acquire The Golden State, which averages out to be 'just 200,000 kroner from every Dane'.

Pocket change, if you ask me.
