Lay’s potato chip recall upgraded over fears they ‘could cause death’

The batch was made in Texas but shipped to two other states

A 'party' sized bag of potato chips won't pack a party for those unlucky enough to happen upon them.

The original flavor of Lay's crisps, as those from the UK call them, has been ordered back to its factory in Plano, Texas.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized the chips under its Class 1 recall - which means exposure or consumption of them could result in 'serious adverse health consequences or death'.

The FDA describe it as a 'situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death'.

So, what has caused the organization to issue its most severe recall warning?

Well, it's because the 13oz family pack of potato chips has a potential, or undeclared, allergy in it - milk.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a milk allergy can be fatal.

It explains: "A milk allergy causes your immune system to overreact to milk proteins. Symptoms include stomach problems, itching, rash and tingling around your mouth. A severe milk allergy may cause anaphylaxis.

"An allergist can diagnose a milk allergy through testing. Treatment includes medications and avoiding products that contain milk."

Frito-Lay, the company that manufactured the chips, issued the following announcement last month: "December 16, 2024 – Frito-Lay today issued a recall of a limited number of 13 oz. bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips that may contain undeclared milk, after being alerted through a consumer contact.

"Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product.

"The product included in this recall was distributed to certain retail stores and e-commerce distributors in Oregon and Washington. Consumers would have been able to purchase these chips as early as November 3, 2024."

It continued: "No allergic reactions related to this matter have been reported to date. No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled."

It went on to explain how the recalled product is in a flexible bag, and its universal packing code is 28400 31041.

To determine whether or not you've got the contaminated treat, it has both a manufacture code of either 6462307xx or 6463307xx, while the 'guaranteed fresh' date will read 11 Feb 2025.

It added: "If consumers have an allergy or sensitivity to milk, they should not consume the product and discard it immediately. Frito-Lay has informed the FDA of this action.
