A man has opened up about how his near-death experience altered his outlook on life.

Former US Marine and businessman Dannion Brinkley, 74 detailed how he learnt he was a ‘spiritual being’ after ‘dying’.

Back in 1975 he was struck by lightning and claims that his ‘soul’ left his body and he had a rather wild out-of-body experience.

After he was rushed away in an ambulance, doctors declared that Brinkley had died but just under 30 minutes later he awoke in a hospital morgue, claiming his soul had returned to his body.

Speaking on the T&H - Afterlife YouTube page, Brinkley opened up about what he believes happened and how it ultimately changed his outlook on life.

He made it clear he saw a lot more than just pitch darkness. In fact, it would inspire him to write a book about his experience, Saved By The Light.

In the video, Brinkley explained: “I was struck by lightning, while talking on the telephone and I discovered that I was a spiritual being with absolutely nowhere to go.

“Absolutely no way to escape the fact that not only was I a spiritual being but that I had chosen and was chosen to be here at this particular time.

“Nowhere to go and on top of that I was dead and completely paralyzed, I was blind and I was burning and on fire because of the damage done by the electrocution burning my nerve endings.”

He claimed that after this he ‘escaped his body’ and had the option to do what was called a ‘life review’ and watch his life replay in a ‘360 degree panorama’.

As well as this, Brinkley claimed that he could also view it from a different person’s point of view and eventually become ‘every person that you ever interacted with’.

He continued: “You feel the direct results of your interaction between you and that person. Most of mine was experiencing pain and anguish and suffering and the brutality that the nature of my life had created... and some good things.”

Brinkley said this helped him come to the understanding that life has ‘goals, structure and parameters’ and that ultimately the world is ‘fair and just’.

Since having this experience, Brinkley has gone on to share his thoughts on the afterlife and death in books, seminars and also counsels terminally ill patients in hospices.
