Pastor calls congregation 'poor' and 'disgusting' for not buying him the watch he wanted

Pastor Carlton Funderburke has now issued an apology video after a clip of him lashing out at his 'broke' congregation went viral.

In John 16:24, Jesus stated: "Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

Well, not in this case, because this church pastor in the US has absolutely lost it after his congregation didn't chip in to get him the fancy watch he wanted.

Pastor Carlton Funderburke of the Church at the Well in Kansas City has found himself in hot water after a fiery sermon of his about 'honouring God’s shepherds' went viral on TikTok.

He tore shreds off the people within his own church for being too 'poor' to give him the pricey timepiece he’d requested.

"See that’s how I know you still poor, broke, busted, and disgusting because of how you’ve been honouring me," Funderburke said at the beginning of his tirade at the start of this month.

"I’m not worth your McDonald’s money? I’m not worth your Red Lobster money? I ain’t worth your St. John’s knit? Y’all can’t afford it no-how."

Oddly, some of the church-goers can be heard responding with encouragement at this moment in the clip.

Funderburke added: "I ain’t worth your Louis Vuitton? I ain’t worth your Prada? I’m not worth your Gucci?"

The Kansas City pastor then brings up a watch he had apparently previously asked for.

"Ooh, you can buy a Movado [watch] at Sam’s [Club] and you know I asked for one last year," he said.

"And here it is all the way in August and I still ain’t got it."

Movado watches range from $AUD 800 ($US 554, £318) to $AUD 5,310 ($US 3,681, £3,055).

The now-viral sermon has copped some pretty intense responses.

One TikTok user said: "Ain’t said one scripture he just preaching his feelings."

A second person added: "That would’ve been my last day in his church."

A third chipped in with: "I would’ve left so fast and loudly, oh no sir."

Funderburke has issued an apology video following the backlash, telling the world that the sermon did not 'reflect my heart or my sentiments toward God’s people'.

He admitted that was 'not discernible' in the now-viral clip.

"Therefore I offer this sincere apology to you today," he said.

"No context could erase the words I used. I apologise to all who have been hurt, angered, or in any way damaged by my words."

He added: "I deeply regret this moment."

Funderburke revealed he has privately apologised to his church, adding that the church 'has extended their love and support' to him.
