The latest Netflix comedy God's Favorite Idiot has come under fire from critics who have savagely described the show as 'one of the worst shows of the year.'

The multi-talented Melissa McCarthy collaborated with husband Ben Falcone in the eight-episode comedy series for Netflix. The show centres around Falcone's Clark who finds himself becoming the messenger of God after he is struck by lightning. Clark is then tasked with saving the people of earth from the impending apocalypse, alongside his colleague and love interest Amily, portrayed by McCarthy.

The show has been compared to the likes of The Good Place and Evan Almighty, however despite sharing a similar concept to both fan favourites, McCarthy and Falcone's latest project has not gone down well with critics, with a host of harsh write ups slamming the show which debuted on 15 June.

The show currently has a 22 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and has been brutally described as 'one of the worst shows of the year,' by The Globe and Mail's John Doyle.

Doyle added there are '...30-second commercials on network TV with more sass and imagination than this crock of God-centric nonsense.' Yikes.

Critics did not hold back elsewhere either, as The AV Club's William Hughes discussed the show's 'sometimes endless willingness to get bogged down in office-life wordplay.' Meanwhile, Variety's Daniel D'Addario aimed his savage review at McCarthy and called the show '...a waste of precious time in the career of a talented performer, one whose fans will follow her anywhere, and who rewards them with so little of what she can do.'

Everyone needs to stop what they are doing right this instant and watch #GodsFavoriteIdiot right now.

McCarthy and Falcone have worked on a number of productions together including the movie Tammy which was written and directed by Falcone and starred McCarthy as the lead. The couple have also collaborated on Superintelligence, Thunder Force and Life Of The Party, all of which have rated poorly, failing to rate above 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, Emmy Award winner McCarthy still remains a fan favourite and has received kinder feedback from social media users on her latest performance.

One Twitter user wrote: "Everyone needs to stop what they are doing right this instant and watch #GodsFavoriteIdiot right now."

Another user praised the couple for the work and wrote: "just finished #GodsFavoriteIdiot and I need more - Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are pure magic only they can give me the emotions I have rn and they are all good amazing work ,once again!!!"

The show has also received praise from hardcore Gilmore Girls fans as McCarthy reunited with her former co-star Yanic Truesdale. The pair appeared on the hit show between 2000 to 2007 as the loveable chef Sookie St. James and sarcastic French receptionist Michel Gerard.

One user wrote: "watching gods favourite idiot and i just cried coz melissa mccarthy stars in it and yanic truesdale just rocked up so it’s a like sookie and michel reunion."

Another user wrote: "IM WATCHING GOD’s FAVORITE IDIOT AND SEEING MELISSA/SOOKIE AND YANIC/MICHEL TOGETHER IS MAKING ME EMOTIONAL???? WHY AM I SO ATTACHED TO GG?????"

A further eight episodes of God's Favorite Idiot will be released as part two on Netflix which is good news for Gilmore Girls fans, as McCarthy and Truesdale have shared they are hopeful for a reunion with their former co-stars Kelly Bishop and Lauren Graham.
