Maxwell Frost becomes first member of Gen Z to be elected to US Congress

The 25-year-old who campaigned on ending gun violence, will ensure young people have a voice in American politics.

Maxwell Frost has become the first member of Generation Z to be elected to US Congress.

Associated Press has called the race for Florida's 10th Congressional District and handed it to the 25-year-old.

Imagine what you were doing when you were halfway to 30.

NPR reports Frost was a big contender to win the election as the district he was running in is safely blue.

He wrote on Twitter as the final votes were being counted: "WE WON!!!! History was made tonight.

"We made history for Floridians, for Gen Z, and for everyone who believes we deserve a better future.

"I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to represent my home in the United States Congress."

With 99 per cent of the votes counted so far, Frost has won 58.8 per cent of the ballot with 112,523 people ticking his name.

He beat Republican Calvin Wimbish by 19 percentage points, who notched 75,959 votes.

Ahead of the midterms, Frost was endorsed by Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey.

Frost campaigned hard on rectifying America's problem with gun violence and has been a fierce advocate for gun reform.

He was the national organizing director for March for Our Lives before launching his bid for Congress.

The 25-year-old decided to become an activist in this issue following the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

He wrote on Twitter just before Americans took to the polls for the midterm elections: "I started Organizing at 15 because I didn’t want to get shot at school."

Frost is so passionate about ending gun violence that he confronted Florida Governor Ron DeSantis about the issue.

He posted a video of himself storming an event where DeSantis was speaking, yelling at the state leader to do something to fix the '100 people dying every day' due to guns'.

Maxwell wrote on social media: "I just asked @GovRonDeSantis to take action on gun violence so we can save lives.

"That we lose 100 people a day. His response? “Nobody wants to hear from you!” We are dying and our Governor is too busy helping @RubinReport make money."

NPR reports Frost also supports Medicare for all and a Green New Deal in addition to gun reform.

Gen Z is the generation of people who are born after 1997, according to the Associated Press, Gallup and Ipsos MORI.

Frost's win in the midterm elections will ensure young people are represented in the United States Congress.
