A man has died in a horrific accident after giant sinkhole opened up in a pool in the village of Karmei Yosef, Israel.

Fox News reports that the man, 32-year-old Klil Kimhi, was attending a private function held by his work when he was pulled underneath around 2 pm in the pool.

Police confirmed: "At the end of operational searches, The Police, The Fire and Rescue Services and the IDF Homefront Command located the missing man, an approximately 30-year-old resident of Tel Aviv — unfortunately he was deceased.”

The lifeguard for the party, Aviv Bublil, told major Israeli news outlet Ynet that she notified people to get out as the ‘vortex’ appeared; however, party-goers remained in the pool.

"Seconds later the ground just dropped, something that looked like a giant sinkhole," she said.

"I saw two people ... two people were missing. One who we could not locate, and one could be seen among the rubbles from above. My first instinct was to try and get inside ... but there was no option to go inside. So they called the rescue services."

Bublil added that many people were initially confused, thinking that Klil was playing a practical joke or game.

Following the man’s death, many friends have taken to social media to grieve the loss.

One friend posted a heartfelt tribute to Facebook, writing in part: “Am in shock that u are no longer here brother.

“And all the guys from the army are now on my way. We just want to be together in these moments.

“Thinking of your family. And my heart was torn apart.”

While another wrote: “Kalil, we will always remember you and your special charm, really the world lost a super unique person! May your memory be a blessing.”

According to CNN, sinkholes appear when acidic rainwater dissolves limestone or similar rock beneath the soil, leading to a large void that crumbles when it’s unable to support the weight from above.

They are particularly common in Florida, as according to Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the state was built upon an unbroken bed of limestone.

However, a video recently emerged in New York of a van being entirely swallowed by a sinkhole after the city was hit with intense flooding, according to Sky News.
