Albertsons Companies has recalled several of its deli items, says the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall was initiated by Fresh Creative Foods, a division of Reser’s Fine Foods, Inc. Albertsons proceeded to recall five items that were supplied by Fresh Creative Foods.

There are fears of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination the items.

"The recall was initiated because these products contain a recalled bowtie pasta ingredient manufactured by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, CA," the FDA explained.

The organization's September 30 announcement goes on: "Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

"Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."

Other symptoms include confusion or changes in alertness, loss of balance, seizures, and flu-like sumptoms, says Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms typically start within two weeks of eating tainted food, but in some cases, it can take over two months.

Products that have been recalled include ready-to-eat basil pesto pasta salad offerings, as well as pasta dishes with chicken, spinach and other ingredients, AP reports.

The select store-made deli items were available for purchase at the following stores: Albertsons, Albertsons Market, Amigos, Andronico's Community Markets, Carrs-Safeway, Eagle, Pak 'N Save, Pavilions, Market Street, Randalls, Safeway, Tom Thumb and Vons in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

People who are concerned about items they may have purchased from these stores have been urged to throw the product in the trash or take it back to the store for a refund.

Elsewhere, it states: "The FDA recommends in these cases that anyone who purchased or received any recalled products to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

"Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces."

Mayo Clinic states that if you experience a high fever, very bad headache, a stiff neck, confusion, and discomfort or pain due to light then you should seek emergency care.
