Footage taken on board a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, shows the final movements of suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. before the woman sitting in front of him, Iryna Zarutska, was stabbed in what appeared to be a completely random attack.
Zarutska, who was a refugee, sadly did not survive the attack which took place on August 22, with her life cut short at just 23 years old after she'd fled the war in Ukraine with her mother, sister and brother.

Brown was arrested just minutes after the attack, when he was met by police who were waiting at the next platform.
Offering insight into the events that took place, officials with the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) have released surveillance footage which shows Brown sitting by the window of the train, with the hood of his red hoodie pulled up over his head.
See his last movements before the attack here:
Brown can be seen leaning on his hand and subtly moving his head around, but otherwise appearing mostly calm while in the carriage.
When the train made its next stop, Zarutska boarded the CATS Blue Line while wearing headphones and took a seat in the row in front of Brown, who had his hand over his face. The pair did not interact in any way, and Zarutska proceeded to look at her phone.

Just a few moments after she boarded the train, Brown appeared to remove something from his pocket.
After Zarutska was stabbed, Brown walked to the other end of the train and removed his hoodie while passengers rushed to help Zarutska, who has been remembered as a gifted artist and an animal lover, ABC 11 reports.

On August 23, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued a statement identifying Brown as a suspect. He is reported as having a history of criminal activity and mental health issues.

The statement read: "Brown was transported to Atrium Health with non-life-threatening injuries sustained at the time of the incident. Brown will be arrested upon his release. He is charged with First Degree Murder...
"Ms. Zarutska’s next of kin has been notified of her death and of this case update. The investigation into this case is active and ongoing."
Brown appeared in court on August 29 and was denied bond by a judge, who also ordered that he undergo a competency evaluation.
When asked about the incident on September 7, Donald Trump described it as 'horrible'.

Following the release of the footage from the train, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said in a statement: "The video of the heartbreaking attack that took Iryna Zarutska's life is now public. I want to thank our media partners and community members who have chosen not to repost or share the footage out of respect for Iryna's family.
"This was a senseless and tragic loss. My prayers remain with her loved ones as they continue to grieve through an unimaginable time. Like so many of you, I'm heartbroken - and I've been thinking hard about what safety really looks like in our city. I remain committed to doing all we can to protect our residents and ensure Charlotte is a place where everyone feels safe."
