Protesters in Brazil have taken to the streets of the nation's capital they refuse to accept the election defeat of far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro.

Thousands rushed past security barricades in Brasília to infiltrate government buildings, with some smashing windows, ransacking offices, and climbing onto roofs during the riot.

The Supreme Court, Presidential Palace, and Congress buildings have all been invaded by angry supporters of right wing former President Jair Bolsonaro, Reuters reports.

The Brazilian government has deployed police and security forces to attempt to get the situation under control.

Protesters are already turning on police, with shocking footage surfacing online that shows a mounted police officer and his horse being attacked by the angry mob.

The US Embassy in Brasilia has released a warning to Americans to avoid the violent clashes and stay well away from the area.

"Violence has no place in a democracy," U.S. chargé d'affaires in Brasilia Douglas Koneff wrote on Twitter.

"We strongly condemn the attacks on the institutions of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Powers in Brasilia, which is also an attack on democracy.

"There is no justification for these acts!"
