Claim Amber Heard Stole Lines From The Talented Mr. Ripley Debunked

The outlandish claim circulated on social media, but it had no factual basis

Viral claims that Amber Heard quoted lines from The Talented Mr. Ripley in court have been debunked.

Johnny Depp, 58, is suing ex-wife Heard, 36, for $50 million (£38.2 million) in a defamation lawsuit over domestic abuse claims she made in a 2018 article in The Washington Post.

Depp's attorneys rested their case on Tuesday (3 May) after 13 days of testimony against Heard, and the Aquaman star has since taken the stand.

The trial has unsurprisingly garnered international attention, with every man and his dog seemingly having their own take on the former couple's bitter dispute.

But before you reach your own conclusions, it's worth verifying the information you consume online.

Various falsehoods have been peddled on social media surrounding the case; most recently, claims that Heard has been pinching lines from movies, as Snopes reports.

One notable example claimed that Heard's opening statement was almost identical to dialogue spoken by Gwyneth Paltrow's character Marge Duval in the 1999 thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Heard's apparent quote read as follows: "The thing with Johnny... it's like the sun shines on you, and it's glorious. And then he forgets you and it's very, very cold.

"When you have his attention, you feel like you're the only person in the world, that's why everybody loves him so much."

The dialogue from the film is as follows: "The thing with Dickie… it's like the sun shines on you, and it's glorious. And then he forgets you and it’s very, very cold.

"When you have his attention, you feel like you're the only person in the world, that's why everybody loves him so much."

The claim gained a lot of traction, despite the fact it was simply shared with the two apparent quotes side by side, without any evidence – even though the whole trial has been publicly available and extensively documented.

What's more, Heard didn't actually make an opening statement, so even the information outside of the quotes isn't accurate.

The most likely explanation is that Heard shared some sentiments which echoed the film, and this was then hugely exaggerated to create a false narrative.

While taking the stand, the 36-year-old did say that being with Depp felt like 'a dream' and he made her feel like 'the most beautiful person in the world', but then 'he would disappear'.

So remember folks - check yourself before you wreck yourself.
